Frisbee Dog Competition
We welcome one of our new correspondents to Sequim and Port Angeles News Online. Cassie Anderson writes about dogs, and in this article she writes about Disc Dogs.
Hooked on Plastic!
This is the story of how I first got hooked on disc dogs, a type of frisbee throwing for dogs. On a visit to the in-laws there was a local Frisbee Dog Competition held in a park. It was a beautiful day for an outing, and we packed up for a day at the park. We planned to watch a fun doggie event while there. The key word here is watch!” Well, we watched and were welcomed by the hosts and competitors with open arms, encouragement, and discs and training tips! By the end of the day they had us out there trying out our first competition! So of course we had to come back for day two, missing the family dinner!

I was hooked! We were given some canine friendly plastic discs and instructions and contact information for the local club. Disc Dogs of the Golden Gate showed me the ropes, got me throwing, and my dog catching! They invited me to Play Days and Fun Runs testing my skills and encouraging me toward the next level!
The Disc Dog Folks are great people, sharing all their trade secrets and pushing creativity to the max! I have been to lots of dog events and sport functions, and never had I been so welcomed and encouraged! It’s a fun group of people who really enjoy what they do with their dogs! Most of the dogs have been rescued, having too much energy for the average home, and becoming Disc Dog stars in their new homes!
That was five years ago! I have since acquired four disc dogs of my own, traveled the country competing, performed in halftime demonstrations and have learned so much about training! Basic obedience is a basic foundation for disc, but you can add endless tricks to that with high five, roll over, spin, weave and so much more. I guess the endless creativity is a draw for me.
My dogs are always learning new things and they are always teaching me something new! We have also learned about proper nutrition and exercise requirements. Disc has me hooked on training! The plastic has landed in Sequim! Olympic Disc Dogs is your local source for disc training and fun get togethers! Have a dog that loves to fetch? Have a high energy dog? Any breed can play disc! For all ages, great family friendly dog sport! Seminars and Fun Runs coming soon!
