Microsoft + Yahoo Does Not Equal Google

Will Microsoft and Yahoo catch up with Google by teaming up?  Rumors that the two will join forces once and for all to slay the dragon known as Google are running rampant, and today we may just know for sure.  What would the new search engine be called?  Yasoft?  Microhoo?

What’s the big deal?  Well, Microsoft would gain volumes of search queries that run through Yahoo’s search engine, and Yahoo would get the opportunity to expand its own position in the search-advertising sales market.  Who knows exactly how such a partnership would be arranged, because both companies are quite proprietary, but it would seem logical that this is a revenue sharing opportunity.  Of course, in the merging or partnerships arrangements of giant tech companies, the devil really is in the details.

The search engine market share of the big three is getting more interesting as time goes on.  The latest statistics I’ve seen on Google’s share is 74% of the U.S. market and 80% worldwide.  Yahoo has 16% in the U.S. and Microsoft has 6%.  [Read the source article here on search engine shares.]  The continuing competition between these three behemoths for search engine share continues.
