Art Correspondent Susan Martin Spar

susan_spar_sequim_artistSusan Martin Spar was born and raised in New York where she received her early training from The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. She pursued an early career in graphic arts and advertising but later took a 15 year hiatus from painting in order to pursue interests in journalism and writing before moving to California in the 1980’s. After relocating to California, she subsequently earned an undergraduate degree in Art and Psychology from Antioch University and then a Masters degree in Psychology and Counseling from California State University of Los Angeles.

Susan returned to her first passion and started pursuing an art career in 2000 and eventually became a full time artist in 2004.  Susan paints both in Oil and Pastel as well as acrylic and is interested in a wide variety of subjects from still life to landscape and the figure. She has studied classical realism with Jeff Watts at the Watts Atelier in Encinitas, California and with David Leffel here in Washington. She is currently undertaking advanced studies with Tenaya Sims at Georgetown Art Center in Seattle.

Ms. Spar has participated in both juried and open exhibitions winning numerous awards for both her pastels and oils.  Her work hangs in both private and public collections throughout the U.S. including the Heritage Park Museum in Corona, CA and the Millard Sheets Foundation in Pomona, CA.
